Bruno Mars Soars To The Stars

By Grace Tzeng

Bruno Mars, the Hawaiian-born musician wooed the hearts of many with his Grammy Award-winning "Just the Way You Are." He won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the event this month.

Mars, born Peter Gene Hernandez, is of Puerto Rican and Filipino descent. When he was a toddler, he acquired his stage name when his father nicknamed him "Bruno" because of his resemblance to professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino.

The singer explained how he thought up his last name in a Rap-Up.com article by Georgette Cline:  “The Mars came up just because I felt like I didn’t have no pizzazz, and a lot of girls say I’m out of this world, so I was like I guess I’m from Mars.” (The article mentioned his age as twenty-three ten months ago, but Wikipedia and another site say he's currently 25 years old.)

Coming from a musical family where everyone sings and plays instruments, Mars plays piano, guitar, bass, and congas. His brother Eric is a drummer in the band as well.

Not only are Bruno Mars and the model nice to look at in this video, but the concept with the cassette tape reel in the video is very creative. It was a wonderful idea by the video’s creator. Enjoy!
