Have Him at Hello by Rachel Greenwald

Rating:  ♥ ♥  It’s an okay read.  It passed the test.

The first thing you need to know about Rachel Greenwald's book Have Him at Hello is that the book was once titled Why He Didn't Call You Back: 1,000 Guys Reveal What They Really Thought About You After Your Date.  It has a new title and also some new content.

Greenwald also wrote Find a Husband After 35: Using What I Learned at Harvard Business School.

This Harvard Business School grad has taken business analysis and applied it to your love life.  And as you would expect, her results come off a little bit like a business text book.

Basically, Greenwald, a dating coach who will do exit interviews of men for women who wonder why a date just didn’t work out, talked to 1,000 men to find out just what it is that makes them flake out after a first date, what makes them stick around, and what you can do about it.

Her book is laid out like a business paper:  first, the section where she describes the type of woman a man wouldn’t call back after a first date (The Boss Lady, for example, which was #1).

Second, a description of what characteristics make the man think you are that type of girl (argumentative, competitive, unfeminine, etc) with anecdotes from her 1,000 interviewees.

Third, the quiz to tell if you may be that type of woman.  And finally, practical tips on what you should do to avoid giving off the unwanted impression (with paragraph titles like “Pull a June Cleaver”, “Look Like a Woman”, etc).  And this repeats for every type or stereotype that consigns a first date to the dating graveyard.

Not surprisingly, we find out that your chances for a second date are doomed if you come off as too masculine (The Boss Lady), too boring or dispassionate about life (The Blahs), or you create false expectations and then don’t live up to them (The Bait & Switcher), among other things.  Even though men aren’t that complicated, after all, Greenwald helps us glimpse into the male mind.

There are various types described in her book that might apply to some women:  The Boss Lady, The Park Avenue Princess, The Closer or The Flasher.  And while Greenwald is giving you the insight into the male mind, she also pokes fun at some of the shallow, illogical things that turn guys off.

Even a Harvard Business School grad admits, sometimes guys we date can just be jerks. All in all, this book was entertaining and helpful, if a little repetitive.
